Configure an OLVM backup policy
You can create a KVM backup policy for your OLVM VMs. There is no separate OLVM policy type. OLVM VM backups run as KVM policies. KVM policies support full backups, incremental backups (differential or cumulative) using Changed Block Tracking (CBT), and the Accelerator policy option.
To configure an OLVM backup policy
- In the NetBackup Web UI, navigate to Policies and click Add.
- On the Attributes tab, set Policy type to KVM.
- (Optional) Select a Policy storage or Storage Lifecycle Policy (SLP) for backup image management
- On the Schedules tab, add one or more schedules. The following schedule types are available for KVM policies:
Schedule type
Backup mode
Description
Full backup
Full
Backs up all blocks on each VM disk. Used to establish an initial baseline or on a periodic schedule.
Differential incremental backup
Incremental (CBT)
Backs up only the blocks that changed since the last backup (full or incremental). Uses oVirt Changed Block Tracking (CBT). CBT state is preserved when a VM is live-migrated to a different OLVM host.
Cumulative incremental backup
Incremental (CBT)
Backs up all blocks that changed since the last full backup. Uses oVirt Changed Block Tracking (CBT). CBT state is preserved when a VM is live-migrated to a different OLVM host.
Note:
Accelerator is a policy option on the Attributes tab. Enable it alongside a differential, cumulative incremental, or full backup schedule to skip data already known from the previous backup, using the same checkpoint chain as CBT.
- On the KVM hosts tab, select the OLVM server you registered.
- On the Backup selections tab, add the VMs to protect using an Intelligent Policy. KVM policies do not support adding VMs manually. Create a query that dynamically selects the virtual machines.
See Configure a query to select KVM virtual machines for backup.
- Select the KVM attributes tab to set OLVM related options.
- Click OK to save the policy.
