Recovering a virtual business service
Recover operation brings up the virtual business services (VBSs) at the recovery data center, when the production data center is down due to any disaster or natural calamities, and the VBSs need to be recovered at the recovery data center in order to provide business continuity. This operation is applicable to all types of virtual business services irrespective of service objective of constituent resiliency groups. From version 4.0 of Resiliency Platform, a new service objective called Multi-RPO recovery of hosts is introduced that manages multiple Recovery Point Objective (RPO) levels.
Note:
The former takeover and restore operations are now merged into one operation called recover.
You need to remember following points while recovering a virtual business service (VBS):
If a resiliency group associated with a VBS is configured for protection using multi- RPO recovery of hosts service objective, you get an option to select recovery path between the Replicated Data (Resiliency Platform Data Mover) and Backup Images (NetBackup) while performing recover on VBS.
If a resiliency group associated with a VBS is configured for protection using single-RPO recovery of hosts service objective, recovery path is pre-selected based on the data availability mode - replication or copy.
For replication-based recovery, since the operation is performed using the latest recovery point, you have no option to choose the recovery point.
For copy-based recovery, the most recent backup image is used for recovering the virtual machines. If a resiliency group associated with a VBS is configured for protection using multi- RPO recovery of hosts service objective, ensure that you have backup images created after the successful configuration of resiliency group before performing recover on VBS.
Before recovering the virtual machines at the selected target data center, virtual machines are stopped and unregistered or deleted on the source data center.
The network settings of the virtual machine are configured as per the subnet mapping, switch or port mapping as specified during the configure for remote recovery operation. Finally, the virtual machine is up and running at the recovery data center.
To recover a virtual business service
- Navigate:
Assets (navigation pane) >> Virtual Business Service(s) tab.
- Use the filters, Search field and locate the VBS you want to recover.
- To perform the Recover operation on the VBS, do one of the following:
Right click on the VBS row and select Recover.
On the VBS row, click the vertical ellipsis and select Recover.
Double click the VBS row, under Management Operations section, select Recover.
- In the Recover Virtual Business Service panel, do the following:
Select the target data center.
Select the checkbox for Confirm outage of assets on the data center to declare outage on source data center.
During the recover operation, if Resiliency Platform detects a probability of data loss, you have the option to abort the recover operation to avoid any data loss. Select the checkbox for Abort recover if these subtasks fail and click Next. This checkbox is applicable to the following resiliency groups:
Configured for protection using a service objective where the data availability mode is Replication.
Configured for protection using multi- RPO recovery of hosts service objective and you want to use 'Replicated Data' option for recovery.
Select the data mover technology from the drop down for resiliency groups configured for protection using multi- RPO recovery of hosts service objective.
You can either select data mover technology for each resiliency group or use Apply to All button to select data mover technology for all applicable resiliency groups.
This selection is available only if VBS is associated with a resiliency group configured for protection using multi- RPO recovery of hosts service objective.
- Click Submit.
