About NetBackup for KVM
NetBackup for KVM provides backup and restore of the KVM virtual machines that run on KVM hosts and OLVM virtual machines that run on OLVM servers. This workload provides the following capabilities:
For KVM
Automatically creates consistent (quiesced) backups.
Performs full and incremental backups of guest virtual machines on KVM hosts..
Backs up the virtual machines that are either powered on or powered off.
Can recover backups to the original KVM host or a different KVM host.
Can restore virtual machines from the backup.
Performs backups directly from the KVM hosts. No additional management application layer (for example, oVirt) is required.
Supports the following disk formats: QCOW2, raw-formatted disks, and block device disks.
Can perform Single-File-Restore (SFR) operations on the KVM host. Specify the policy type as KVM on the Recovery > Regular recovery web UI screen.
Supports Accelerator
Supports Hypervisor credentials
In this guide, a KVM "domain" is referred to as virtual machine or VM.
For OLVM:
Perform full and incremental Changed Block Tracking (CBT) backups of OLVM VMs. Backups are crash-consistent.
Run Accelerator / Incremental-Forever backups. CBT state is preserved when a VM is live-migrated to a different OLVM host which means that the next incremental backup does not reset to a full backup.
Restore a full VM to OLVM. The restored VM includes all original disks, NIC configuration, BIOS/firmware type, high-availability configuration, VM tags, boot order, and delete protection. No manual post-restore steps are required.
Restore individual files from a VM backup, either to a NetBackup client inside the guest VM or by downloading files directly from the NetBackup Web UI.
Use Intelligent Policies to automatically include VMs.
Integrate OLVM backups with Storage Lifecycle Policies (SLP) and Automatic Image Replication (AIR).
Back up VMs on NFS, Fiber Channel (FC), and iSCSI storage domains.
Manage all OLVM backup and restore operations from the NetBackup Web UI.
