Ransomware attackers specifically target and attempt to destroy backup systems to increase the probability of payment. Hardening your system is critical. Please ensure you have reviewed your platform security using the Security Hardening Checklist

Oracle credential types in the NetBackup Credential management

The NetBackup web UI supports Wallet-based authentication, Oracle authentication, and OS authentication.

The NetBackup Credential Management System (CMS) in NetBackup lets you store credentials in NetBackup to use for specific NetBackup operations.

The following limitations apply for a stored credential that is created in Credential management:

  • An Oracle clone operation only supports the Oracle credential types Use operating system credential and Use Oracle and operating system credentials. You cannot use Use Oracle Wallet or Use Oracle credentials for cloning operations.

  • The credential option Use Oracle and operating system credentials can be used for cloning operations, but during the clone NetBackup ignores the Oracle credentials.

Refer to the following Oracle information for recommendations for the authentication of users.

Authentication of Database Administrators by Using the Operating System

Configuration requirements and limitations

Use Oracle Wallet

Note:

Cohesity and Oracle recommend that you use Oracle Wallet for maximum security.

The wallet path must be provided to NetBackup. Edit the database and add the path as per your requirements.

  • The Oracle Wallet folder location must be on a file system.

  • Each instance must have its own entry in a shared wallet.

  • For Oracle RAC:

The same path must be used for each node of the cluster.

You must put a specific connection identifier in the wallet.

For more information about the connect identifier:

  • The configuration for a single instance database must include the TNS name (the Net service name or TNS alias) and the Oracle Wallet path.

Limitations

This option is not available for cloning operations.

Use Oracle credentials

If using a TNS connection, make sure to edit the Oracle database in NetBackup to include the TNS name. It is recommended that the Oracle database user have SYSBACKUP privileges to limit NetBackup's exposure to your database. The Oracle database user can also have SYSDBA privileges (based on the version of Oracle).

Limitations

This option is not available for cloning operations.

Use operating system credentials

It is recommended that the Oracle database user have SYSBACKUP privileges to limit NetBackup's exposure to your database. The Oracle database user can also have SYSDBA privileges (based on the version of Oracle).

For cloning operations, the following requirements apply for Windows:

  • The account must have OS Administrator privileges and have Oracle DBA privileges.

  • For a domain account, also specify the Operating system domain. For a local account, leave the Operating system domain empty or use a "."

  • See the following information for requirements for the Oracle Home User.

    See Oracle Home User requirements.

For cloning operations on UNIX/Linux, the account must have Oracle DBA privileges.

Use Oracle and operating system credentials

When this credential type is used for cloning, NetBackup ignores the Oracle credentials.

See the configuration requirements for Use operating system credential.

Oracle Home User requirements

When you create a stored credential, you must also specify the Oracle Home User credentials when the target Oracle installation was installed using an OS account. (These credentials are not a virtual account or a Windows Built-in account like Local System.)

The Oracle Home User can be any of the following: a Windows Built-in account or a Virtual account or a standard Windows user account that is not an Administrator account.
