NetBackup™ Security and Encryption Guide

Calculate file hashes for backup images

Use this procedure to calculate file hashes for backup images.

To calculate file hashes

  1. On the left, click Detection and reporting > Malware detection.
  2. Click Scan for malware.
  3. In the Search by option, select Backup images.
  4. Select Hash calculation as the scan type.
  5. In the search criteria, review and edit the following:
    • Policy name - Only supported policy types are listed.

    • Client name - Displays the clients that have backup images for a supported policy type.

    • Policy type - Displays all the supported policy types that are enabled for hash calculation.

    • Type of backup - Displays all the supported type of backups that are enabled for hash calculation.

    • Copies - If the selected copy does not support instant access, then the backup image is skipped for the hash calculation. (For NAS-Data-Protection policy type) Select the Copies as Copy 2.

    • Disk pool - MSDP (PureDisk), SpanFS, OST (for example, Data Domain) and AdvancedDisk storage type disk pools are listed.

    • Disk type - MSDP (PureDisk), SpanFS, OST (for example, Data Domain) and AdvancedDisk disk types are listed.

    • Infection status - The malware-infected status of the backup images can be searched based on the following types: infection detected by malware scan, file hash search, not infected, not scanned or all.

    • For the Select the timeframe of backups, verify the date and the time range or update it.

  6. Click Search.
  7. Select the search criteria and ensure that the selected compute host is active and available.
  8. From the Select the backups to scan table, select one or more images for which hashes were previously calculated and that are not listed in the search results.
  9. Click Calculate file hash.
  10. After the hash calculation job is initiated, you can view progress on the Activity monitor UI.

During the hash calculation job, the generated hashes are immediately transferred to the File Hash Server and ingested. This allows the hashes to be searched and used instantly without any delay. If file hash transfer for another image is in progress, the file hashes are queued and transferred and ingested at regular intervals.

Advanced configuration parameters

Use the following advanced configuration parameters to customize file hash calculation behavior and optimize performance.

Table: Advanced file hash configuration parameters

Parameter

Description

HASH_SCAN_MAX_FILE_SIZE_IN_MB

Specifies the maximum file size (in MB) for hash calculation.

A value of 0 indicates no limit. Default: 200.

HASH_SCAN_NESTED_ARCHIVE_DEPTH

Specifies the maximum depth for nested archive extraction.

A value of -1 indicates no limit. Default: 10.

DISABLE_FHS_TRANSFER

Controls automatic transfer of images to the file hash server during hash calculation.

Default: 1 (enabled).

FILE_HASH_BID_BATCH_INTERVAL

Specifies the interval (in seconds) for file hash transfer.

Default: 86400.

AUTO_CLEAN_FILE_HASH_FROM_CATALOG

Set to 1 on the primary server to automatically delete file hashes and reduce catalog size.
