NetBackup™ Deduplication Guide

About the MSDP volume group

A large NetBackup system usually has multiple MSDP servers. You may want to handle them together as one single pool to simplify the management.

The MSDP volume group (MVG) is an MSDP capability to build the volume groups in the storage layer on top of individual MSDP storage servers. One volume group is represented to NetBackup as a virtual volume, and this virtual volume is called an MVG volume. It can be used by NetBackup like a regular volume in a disk pool or storage unit configurations. The MSDP server that has the MVG capability and manages the MVG volumes is called an MVG server. It is a lightweight MSDP server.

The following are some of the advantages of the MSDP volume group:

  • Groups the MSDP volumes to represent a large storage pool for ease of management.

  • Improves system resilience with node failures.

  • Manages the workload assignments and balancing.

    • Assignments for systems with a large number of clients at initial setup time

    • Assignments for newly added clients during the normal operation

    • Rebalance with storage server addition for capacity expansion

    • Reassignments to tolerate the storage failures

  • Addresses the following storage unit group limitations:

    • Auto image replication (AIR)

    • Optimized duplication target support

  • Supports almost all existing MSDP capabilities.

See Limitations of the MSDP volume group.

  • Works with the new or the existing MSDP servers.

  • Lowers the total cost of ownership with single experience with NetBackup Appliance, Flex, and BYO.
