NetBackup™ Deduplication Guide

MVG load balancing levels

MVG server selects a disk volume for a client and policy combination as the primary or historic node based on one of the following load balancing levels when a backup job starts.

By default, MVG uses the Gold level. It is not recommended to use other levels in a customer environment unless necessary.

Table: MVG load balancing levels

Level

Description

Gold (Default)

The following criteria are used when assigning a new client+policy to a disk volume:

  • Node affinity

  • The used space percentage

  • The evenness of assignment distribution

It is used only when the election with node affinity and the used space percentage fails.

  • Source ID hooking

Find an available disk volume from the location hashed from the given source ID.

Used to find the seed disk volume candidate for used space percentage.

Silver

The following criteria are used when assigning a new client+policy to a disk volume:

  • The used space percentage

  • The evenness of assignment distribution

Used only when selection based on used space percentage fails

  • Source ID hooking

Find an available disk volume from the location hashed from the given source ID.

Used to find the seed disk volume candidate for used space percentage.

Bronze

The following criterion is used when assigning a new client+policy to a disk volume:

  • The evenness of assignment distribution

Iron

The following criterion is used when assigning a new client+policy to a disk volume:

  • Source ID hooking

Find an available disk volume from the location hashed from the given source ID.

Additional notes:

  • In a backup job, with any LB level, whether it is a new or existing client+policy combination, MVG server doesn't return a disk volume that is detected as inactive or full, regardless of the effort it makes. Exceptions include when a disk volume is in maintenance mode, its downtime hasn't exceeded the rebalance freezing time, or in extreme cases where every disk volume in the current MVG volume is unavailable.

  • The LB levels do not apply to image read or deletion jobs, as the MVG server directly returns the disk volume that manages the image.

  • It is not recommended to use LB levels other than "Gold" in a production environment, unless necessary.

  • With the default LB level "Gold", it is recommended to set the media servers of the MSDP servers as the load balance media servers for the MVG server. You can configure this in the NetBackup Web UI under the storage server details.
